Could there be a better message right now? Life is overwhelming at times. Businesses are being pushed hard, leaders are tired, and families are feeling the overflow of work/life stress spillover (it’s a real, and scientific thing) more and more.
The best option we can take is to hone our focus and simplify our lives and our businesses.
Simplifying isn’t just about doing less; it’s about doing more of what truly matters. It’s about being clear on what you’re putting your focus on, reducing distractions around it, and remaining clear on why that’s the thing you are putting your energy into. This intentional focus helps our brain by reducing the cognitive energy we spend jumping between tasks and ideas and over-thinking things. This is crucial because our brains can only handle about four hours of heavy cognitive load a day.
The Science Behind Simplifying
Neuroscience supports the idea that simplifying can lead to better performance and wellbeing. When we reduce the number of decisions we have to make, we conserve cognitive energy, which can be redirected towards more meaningful and impactful tasks. This is particularly important for leaders who need to maintain a high level of cognitive function throughout the day. By focusing on fewer, more important tasks, we can enhance our productivity and creativity, and avoid the mental fatigue that comes from constant multitasking.
For me, simplifying meant dedicating today as a planning day – organising my week properly, getting on top of some personal admin before school holidays kick in next week, and just allowing myself some space to feel clear.
- Plan Ahead: Start your week with a clear plan. Identify your top priorities and allocate specific times to work on them. This reduces the mental load of constantly deciding what to do next.
- Declutter Your Environment: A cluttered space can lead to a cluttered mind. Take a few minutes each day to tidy up your workspace.
- Set Boundaries: Clearly define your work hours and stick to them. This helps prevent work from spilling over into your personal time and vice versa.
- Limit Distractions: Turn off notifications, close unnecessary tabs, and create a workspace that minimizes interruptions.
- Delegate: Identify tasks that can be delegated to others. This frees up your time to focus on high-impact activities.
- Practice Mindfulness: Incorporate mindfulness practices like meditation or deep-breathing exercises to help maintain focus and reduce stress.
In business, simplifying can lead to more sustainable performance. Leaders who create environments that support self-responsibility and provide tools for managing energy and mindset can reduce the dependence of their teams on constant guidance. This not only boosts individual performance but also fosters a culture of autonomy and empowerment.
Additionally, understanding the importance of real recovery – not just physical rest but cognitive and emotional rejuvenation – is essential. This could mean taking regular breaks, disconnecting from technology, or spending time in nature to recharge.
Where can you simplify a bit this week? Take a moment to reflect on your current practices and identify areas where you can reduce complexity. Remember, simplifying is not about doing less for the sake of it, but about making room for what truly matters. By doing so, you’ll not only enhance your performance but also improve your overall wellbeing and that of those around you.
