Employees tired and overwhelmed? Your leadership skills might need some tweaking…

Last week’s blog looked at the difference between high performance and high burnout culture. Often we see the leaders in businesses confuse the two and that’s ok – it’s a common situation because most leaders have been brought up with a “work harder” instead of “work smarter” mentality.

Now we know better……now don’t get me wrong…….I’m not suggesting everyone starts slacking off, but it’s important to understand the neuroscience we now have at our fingertips to help us to work with the brain and work smarter rather than just focus on working harder which unfortunately will often lead to a decline in productivity.

It’s also important to know that no two brains are created the same and therefore there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach to working smarter. For example, someone with a short attention span should work completely differently to someone with a longer attention for maximum results.

Leadership used to be about “how do you motivate others?” These days it’s more around “how do you coach others to motivate themselves without getting burnt out?” If the people in your team are showing signs of stress, tiredness and more sickness than a few days a week, it might be time for you to see if your leadership skills need some tweaking.
